The scale is moving. But what exactly is leaving?

If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication — and a lot of our neighbors here in Ascension Parish are — you’ve probably seen the number on the scale drop faster than it ever has before. That part is exciting.

Here’s the part nobody warns you about: the scale can’t tell the difference between fat and muscle. It just shows one number going down.

When weight comes off quickly and appetite drops, some of what you lose isn’t fat at all. It’s muscle — and sometimes bone density goes with it. That matters more than most people realize, because muscle is not just about how you look. Muscle is how you carry groceries up the steps, get up off the floor, keep your balance, and stay independent as you age.

The good news? This is one of the most fixable problems in fitness. You don’t have to choose between losing weight and keeping your strength. You just need a plan that protects the muscle while the fat comes off.

And if you have questions about your medication itself — the dose, the side effects, whether it’s right for you — that’s a conversation for your provider, not a gym. Talk to your provider first about anything medication-related. Our job is the training and the nutrition, and we take that job seriously.

Why muscle is the thing you can’t afford to lose

Think of muscle as your body’s engine and its insurance policy at the same time.

After age 40, adults naturally start losing muscle every year — a slow process that speeds up if you’re not fighting it. Add fast weight loss on top of that, without strength training and without enough protein, and the loss can speed up even more.

That shows up in real life:

  • Strength: everyday tasks get harder, not easier, even as you get lighter
  • Balance and bones: less muscle means less support for your joints and less protection for your bones
  • Metabolism: muscle burns calories around the clock, so losing it makes keeping the weight off harder later
  • The “soft” look: people sometimes lose a lot of weight but don’t love what they see, because the shape underneath never got built

This is why two people can lose the same 30 pounds and end up in completely different places. One loses mostly fat and keeps their strength. The other loses fat and muscle — and feels weaker at a smaller size.

The difference is almost never the medication. It’s what they did while taking it.

The fix, part one: strength training with a coach

Muscle only stays if you give it a reason to stay. That reason is resistance — making your muscles work against a challenge, a few times a week, with a plan that builds over time.

That’s harder to do alone than it sounds, especially if you’re newer to training or your appetite and energy have changed. It’s exactly why Regymen Fitness Ascension is coach-led. Every workout is guided. A coach watches your form, adjusts the weight, and scales the workout to where you are that day — whether it’s your first session ever or your five-hundredth.

You don’t have to guess what to do, and you don’t have to wonder if you’re doing it right. You show up, and we handle the plan. You can see how our training works on the workouts page.

Our members are mostly adults over 35 — working people, parents, grandparents — not bodybuilders. The goal isn’t to train like a 22-year-old athlete. The goal is to get stronger, steadily and safely, while the fat comes off.

The fix, part two: protein first

When your appetite shrinks, every bite has to count. And the nutrient that protects muscle more than any other is protein.

Protein gives your body the building blocks it needs to repair and keep muscle after training. If you’re eating much less than you used to — which is common on these medications — it’s easy to fall short on protein without even realizing it. You feel full, so you assume you’re fine. But full and covered are two different things.

This is where most people go wrong: they focus only on eating less, when the real goal is eating right at a smaller appetite.

Every new member at Regymen can get a personalized nutrition program built by Coach L at Xtreme Performance Nutrition. It’s built around your scan, your goals, and the foods you’ll actually eat — protein first, no starvation diets, no weird rules you can’t live with. If you want to dig into the supplement side of eating well on a smaller appetite, the team at Xtreme Performance Nutrition can walk you through what actually helps and what’s just marketing.

The proof: Fit3D scans don’t guess

Here’s the problem with everything we just said: how do you know if you’re keeping your muscle?

Not from the scale. The scale will lie to you with a straight face.

Our Fit3D body scan gives you the real picture in about a minute: your body fat, your lean muscle, your measurements, and where you’re starting from. Then you scan again down the road and compare — and you can see, in plain numbers, whether the weight you lost came from fat or from muscle.

That changes the whole game. Instead of hoping your plan is working, you know. And if the numbers say muscle is slipping, we adjust the training and the protein before it becomes a problem — not after.

We get a lot of questions about how the scan works and what the numbers mean. We put the most common ones on our FAQ page if you want to read up before you come in.
